Kai and Oscar Visit the Dentist

Page 1

On Thursday after school, Kai tucks Oscar under his arm. He and Mum are going to meet Dr Amara, the dentist. ‘You're coming too,’ Kai tells his green octopus.

Dr Amara welcomes Kai and Mum while Oscar rests on Kai’s lap in the waiting room.

Page 2

In the waiting room, Kai sits beside Mum. He holds one of Oscar's soft arms. Dr Amara comes to the door. ‘Kai? Come and have a look.’ Mum comes with him.

Kai and Mum look at the dental chair while Dr Amara stands beside it.

Page 3

There is a big chair, a bright light and a little round mirror on a handle. Kai stays beside Mum to look. ‘You can look before you sit,’ she says. Kai walks closer.

Kai points to the small mirror Dr Amara is holding; Mum sits beside the chair.

Page 4

‘Does that go in my mouth?’ Kai asks, pointing at the mirror. ‘Yes. It helps me see your teeth,’ says Dr Amara. Kai chooses the chair. Mum sits beside him. ‘I'm here.’ Oscar stays in his lap.

Hana Finds Her Peg

Page 1

On Monday, Hana and Mum walk to Oakfield Primary. Hana's blue fidget is in her pocket. At the classroom door, Mr Patel says hello. ‘I'll meet you here at quarter past three,’ Mum says.

Hana touches her name beneath a boat picture while Mr Patel points to her coat peg.

Page 2

Inside, Hana sees a row of coat pegs. Mr Patel points to a picture of a boat. Under the boat is her name. ‘Hana.’ She runs her finger along the letters.

Hana hangs her muted-blue coat beneath the boat picture and her name.

Page 3

Hana hangs her coat on the boat peg. She looks back at it before she goes into the classroom. There is one thing she knows already: where her coat belongs.

Mr Patel shows Hana a chair at a table where two children look towards her.

Page 4

Mr Patel shows Hana where to sit. She does not know the children at her table yet. One child looks up. Hana gives a little nod. She can take time to get to know them.

The Landing Light Stays On

Page 1

Bath finished. Two stories read. Daniel settles Mr Pellow under his cheek. At half past seven, Dad reaches for the big light. ‘The landing light stays on,’ Daniel says. ‘Yes,’ says Dad.

Daniel lies awake in the darkened bedroom, with warm light coming through the narrow doorway.

Page 2

The bedroom changes when the big light goes off. Dad leaves the door open a hand's width. A strip of landing light stretches across the floor. Daniel can still see it from his pillow.

Daniel rests his cheek on Mr Pellow beside two books; the landing glows through the door gap.

Page 3

‘I'll look in at eight,’ Dad says. ‘Even if I'm awake?’ asks Daniel. ‘Even if you're awake.’ Dad goes downstairs. Daniel listens to his footsteps.

The ordinary chair stands beside Daniel’s bed, with a strip of landing light across the floor.

Page 4

The chair makes a darker shape beside the wall. It is the same chair that was there during the stories. Daniel looks from the chair to the strip of light. Mr Pellow is warm under his cheek.

Dan Walks Home

Page 1

On Monday, Dan comes out of the school gate with his bag on his back. Today he is walking home by himself. He and Dad have practised this route together. Dad will be at home.

Dan walks past the corner shop towards a crossing showing a red pedestrian signal.

Page 2

Left at the gate. Past the shops. Dan recognises the corner shop and the crossing just beyond it. His phone is in his pocket. He walks along the pavement at his own pace.

Dan looks left towards traffic before the marked crossing, with his backpack on and the green pedestrian signal lit.

Page 3

At the crossing, Dan presses the button and waits back from the edge. When the green person appears, he looks and checks that the traffic has stopped before he crosses. He keeps looking as he goes.

Dan walks along the pavement of his familiar residential road with his backpack.

Page 4

Now Dan is on his road. He knows the family plan: stop somewhere safe to phone Dad if he needs him. If he needs help and cannot reach Dad, Ms Shah's corner shop is their agreed backup.

Ruby Didn't Want to Play

Page 1

Today at lunch, Jena wanted to play with Ruby. Ruby did not want to play with her. That is the part of lunchtime Jena keeps thinking about.

A close view of Jena’s quiet, sad expression beneath her red hair.

Page 2

Jena has felt sad all afternoon. Wanting to play with someone and not getting to can hurt. The feeling has stayed with her. It does not have to be gone already.

Jena sits and looks upwards with a thoughtful, uncertain expression.

Page 3

Jena does not know why Ruby did not want to play. There may be things she does not know about Ruby's day. This story cannot tell her the reason. Wanting to play was not wrong.

Jena sits cross-legged on the floor in a quiet reflective moment.

Page 4

Today was one lunchtime. It does not tell Jena what every lunchtime will be like. Ruby might want to play another day, or she might not. Jena does not have to decide tonight what to do tomorrow.
